A First or Second Breath

Within a single breath, I can create or destroy. I can harm or help. What inside me sets the path for automatic actions and reactions that do not seem to contemplate their ripple effect? I can easily wade into the pool of negativity that permeates today’s society, or I can become a candle of positivity casting light into the darkness. The latter is better and the former seems easier.

I can choose to look in awe at the magnificent rainbow out my car side window, or scowl at the traffic ahead out the front window. Either way, the situation and effort seem the same. I am sitting in the same seat and in the same car. What is different is my perspective and reaction to the situation I am in.

I can admire my natural surroundings and the living things that are there or I can litter and disregard any impact I have on that space. I know one is right and the other is not, but why don’t all people see it this way?

The automatic actions and reactions must be driven by an internal compass that has been created over time based upon values, culture, and general beliefs. If a compass points north and I know I am headed northeast, should I keep walking in the wrong direction?

In a second breath, I can pause and calibrate my internal compass. Will I wait for my second breath?
